The electronic text of the Indonesian LDS scriptures is now online on the Church’s scriptures Web site (see scriptures.lds.org/ind).

Indonesia is the fourth most populous country of the world, so there is good potential for growth and miracles.

You can also find a link to these online scriptures on the individual LDS.org language materials pages. The online scriptures includes the text of the triple combination (the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price) with footnotes, study helps, maps, photographs, and the ability to mark scriptures. It also includes the Guide to the Scriptures, an alphabetical listing of gospel topics.

This brings the total number of languages on the Church’s scriptures Web site to 18: Cebuano, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, and Tongan.

The next language planned to release is Japanese.

My recent article about the translations of the Book of Mormon included a list of the Book of Mormon translations in sequence of first publication.

This article is in response to requests for full lists of language translations of LDS scriptures. Many of these can be found online in text and audio formats at scriptures.lds.org.

The Book of Mormon is published in 107 languages, and many of them are available in multiple formats online.

History

In March 1830, 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon were printed in the E. B. Grandin print shop in Palmyra, New York. From that humble beginning, today the Church prints over 3 million copies a year on large web presses. By the end of this year, nearly 150 million copies will have been distributed. Truly, this important witness of Jesus Christ is beginning to cover the earth.

It is also interesting to note the increasingly rapid pace of translation work. In its first 100 year history (1830-1930), the Book of Mormon was translated into 16 languages. In the next 68 years (1931-1999), all or part of the Book of Mormon was translated into another 80 languages. Today, all or part of the Book of Mormon has been translated into 108 languages. 82 are translations of the full book and 26 are translations of Selections from The Book of Mormon, which contains the doctrinal teachings amounting to approximately one third of the full book. One translation of Selections, Hebrew, is out of print, leaving 107 translations available today.

Today

The Book of Mormon is available in print in various sizes, including large-print editions in English, Spanish, and Portuguese for the visually impaired and on DVD in American Sign Language.

The Church’s scriptures Web site (scriptures.lds.org) has text available in 17 languages : Cebuano, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, and Tongan.

Special Braille files are available online in English Braille and Spanish Braille. Audio recordings of the scriptures are also available online in many languages.

The Scriptures CD-ROM has the full scriptures in many languages as well as various study and research aids.

The Church also publishes online the Holy Bible in English and Spanish. (In other languages, the Church uses an existing Bible translation.)

The Book of Mormon and the Bible are available in English in ePub format for e-readers and in various formats for mobile devices.

Exciting new features include personalized study tools that let you take notes, highlight/underline verses, tag verses, and save them to a folder. You can also Share your favorite verses with friends. What you see today is only phase 1. More is still to come, such as the ability to search your notes and view your tags.

In advance of next year’s study of the New Testament in Sunday School Gospel Doctrine classes, the Church has published a smaller paperback edition of the New Testament. This more portable, convenient size (404 pages, rather than 2,000+ pages of current LDS edition of the KJV of the Bible) is just over ¼” thick. It is the standard size (5¼” x 7¼”) and has standard size print and all the footnotes, but without the Topical Guide, Bible Dictionary, Joseph Smith Translation, Bible maps, and photographs. That makes it very handy to carry and read on the bus, or for your kids to carry to Church.

This new publication sells for  $2.00 and is available in English only for a limited time and in select areas to see if it should be continued and implemented worldwide. During this evaluation period (through the end of the year), it is available in Church distribution stores in Utah from Logan to Spanish Fork. It may also be special ordered through other Church distribution stores and is available by phone and LDScatalog to customers in the United States and Canada. The item number is 09215000.
