A friend of mine, Steven K. Jones, has compiled The Good List: Using Movies From the Lord’s Side of the Line and has agreed to share it with others.

The list was compiled considering the following counsel from George Albert Smith: “All safety, all righteousness, all happiness are on the Lord’s side of the line . . . All that enriches our lives and prepares us for eternal joy is on the Lord’s side of the line” (Conference Report, Oct. 1949, 5-6).

Key quotes, ideas, principles, and scriptures are provided for most of the movies on the list. These “keys” unlock the principal messages in the films and provide a basis for discussing the stories together as a family.

The first 2 pages of the list give ideas and guidelines to parents on how to make wise media choices. Steve suggests that parents do the following:

1. Hold family councils to decide what your media standards are going to be.
2. Spend enough quality time with your children that you are the main influence in their lives.
3. Make good media choices yourself and set the example.
4. Limit the amount of time your children watch TV or play video games or use the Internet.
5. Use Internet filters.
6. Locate computers and TVs in much used common rooms.
7. Take time to watch appropriate media with your children and discuss with them how to make  choices that will uplift and build rather than degrade and destroy.

To find more information about a movie you are considering, you may want to use the following sources:

• Internet Movie Database (IMDb.com) By far the most comprehensive database anywhere, including user comments, user ratings, memorable quotes, and external reviews.
• Decent Films (decentfilms.com) Movies reviewed from a moral standpoint. Rates them on recommendability, artistic and entertainment value, moral and spiritual value, and audience.
• Christian Spotlight at the Movies (christiananswers.net/spotlight) Gives helpful reviews and moral guidelines. Occasionally reviews are not in harmony with Church standards.
• Screen It! (screenit.com) Provides detailed reviews and cautions for parents on the content of movies. Some sections are free.

Tired of listening to radio stations that only play some music that you like? Don’t want to risk hearing offensive songs? Pandora Internet Radio may be the answer for you.

Pandora is your own, personalized, free radio station that you can access on the Internet, smartphones, and other devices. A radio station just for you, with only the music you like. Just enter the name of your favorite artist, song, or composer and the service plays that music on your station. You fine-tune the station using a ”thumbs up” or “thumbs down” feature to indicate what you like. The service also suggests music you may like based on analyzing 400 different characteristics of the songs you like against their massive database of 710,000 songs that have been analyzed during the 10-year Music Genome Project. Their collection contains almost a century of popular recordings–new and old, well-known and completely obscure.

If you like a selection, you vote thumbs up and the station will find more songs like that. Thumbs down narrows the song choices to those you like. Then sit back and enjoy as it creates a listening experience full of current and soon-to-be favorite songs for you.

The free services allows you to create up to 100 unique “stations” and listen up to 40 hours a month. More costs 99 cents for the rest of the calendar month. They also have an unlimited, ad-free service for $36 a year.

In addition to listening on the Internet and smartphones, you can (or will soon be able to) listen on TVs, Blu-ray players, clock radios, car audio systems, TV set-top boxes, and other devices.

Zytu Search Safe has created a safe browsing environment that is both entertaining and useful. You can watch thousands of videos and photos and be confident that you will find only family-friendly material. You can also upload and share your favorite videos and photos in a safe environment.

Zytu.org has created a content rating system similar to movie ratings. The content on Zytu receives a content rating of iG, iPG, or iPG13 before it becomes available for users. All content is rated, including usernames, profile pictures, videos, video titles, video descriptions, video comments, video tags, photos, photo titles, photo descriptions, photo comments, and photo tags.

When users come to browse the Zytu.org websites, they will only see content that has been given an iG rating. To gain access to additional content, users can create a Zytu account, where they choose the levels of content they would like their account to access. Parents can set up sub-accounts for children with specific rating levels.

BYU Television is celebrating 10 years of success and in 2010 will be expanding their vision. BYU Television, a service provided by BYU Broadcasting, is often confused with KBYU TV. While KBYU TV is a public service limited to Utah, BYU Television reaches audiences across the world on 650 cable systems–reaching more than 50 million households in the USA and millions more internationally.

BYU-TV’s new tagline, “See the Good in the World,” describes their mission to provide good content with LDS values, including content from BYU campuses and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Programs often include BYU devotionals, BYU sports, General Conference, and various religious and educational series. Four original series produced by BYU-TV will launch in January:

• The Generations Project is a genealogy-based show where individuals with compelling stories trace their roots. In this reality show, individuals discover things about their own family at the same time the audience does.
• Messiah: Behold the Lamb of God follows the life and mission of Jesus Christ from the pre-mortal life to the final judgment.
• Iris is a documentary biography series.
• The Food Nanny is a make-over show where family mealtimes are rescued in order to help families connect more.

BYU-TV has about 70 full-time staff and over 200 student employees. The station will also be overhauling their Web sites and reaching out through social media to better connect to audiences and to make a richer BYU-TV experience.

BYU-TV is a good source of family-friendly television programming.
