Member Video: Mission Man (Gotta Teach ‘Em All!)

by Larry Richman on November 5, 2012

I recently shared several videos created by young men in several stakes (see part 1 and part 2). So many people responded that they enjoyed these videos, that I’ve collected a few more.

After you watch today’s video, click the YouTube logo in the bottom right of the video so you can go to YouTube and click Like. That will make it more popular on YouTube so it will be more likely to be seen by others. If you see a video I should share, please leave a link to it in the comments below and I’ll feature it in a future post.

In the spirit of the new missionary age announcement, “Mission Man (Gotta Teach ‘Em All!) is a video put together by the young men of the West Hills Ward in Knoxville, TN. It’s a parody of the Pokémon Theme Song and is meant to portray the enthusiasm of missionaries in a fun and stereotypical way, while still demonstrating a good spirit and the joy that comes through missionary service. The group calls themselves Stripling Studios, and is directed by a young aspiring film maker who is leaving on his mission in January (see bio below). The video was screened at the Especially for Youth Variety Shows in Provo, Utah and Bowling Green, Kentucky on July 26th, 2012.

Lyrics:
I want to be the very best,
No Mormon ever was;
To find them is my real test,
To teach them is my cause.

I will travel across the land,
Searching far and wide;
Every Elect to understand
The power that’s inside!

Mission Man (Gotta teach ‘em all!)
It’s you and me;
We know it’s our destiny!
Mission Man!
Oh, you’re my best friend,
In a world we must defend.
Mission Man (Gotta teach ‘em all!)
A book that’s true!
Our virtue will pull us through!
With the Spirit we’ll teach you,
Mission Man!
Gotta teach ‘em all!

Each temptation along the way
I’ll turn away my face.
I’ll be praying everyday
For strength to run the race!

Come with us, and seek the light,
There’s no better team;
Arm and arm we’ll choose the right,
It’s always been our dream!

Mission Man (Gotta teach ‘em all!)
It’s you and me;
We know it’s our destiny!
Mission Man!
Oh, you’re my best friend,
In a world we must defend.
Mission Man (Gotta teach ‘em all!)
A book that’s true!
Our virtue will pull us through!
With the Spirit we’ll teach you,
Mission Man!
Gotta teach ‘em all! Gotta teach ‘em ALLLL!!!

Mission Man (Gotta teach ‘em all!)
It’s you and me;
We know it’s our destiny!
Mission Man!
Oh, you’re my best friend,
In a world we must defend.
Mission Man (Gotta teach ‘em all!)
A book that’s true!
Our virtue will pull us through!
With the Spirit we’ll teach you,
Mission Man!
Gotta teach ‘em all. Gotta teach ‘em all!
MISSION MAN.

About Barrett Burgin

This video was directed by a young aspiring film maker named Barrett Burgin, who recently received his mission call. When asked about creating the video, he said:

“I asked myself ‘what is something that is typical of most (or at least many) LDS kids?’ I realized that at almost every scout camp, youth conference, girl’s camp, EFY, etc, you will find kids taking the lyrics to a song and changing them to be…well, ‘Mormony.’

“I thought it would be really fun to make a video of a familiar song using Mormon lyrics. The Pokémon song always made me think of the zeal and determination of missionaries. I talked to some of my friends about it, and we created ‘Mission Man.’ It was a lot of fun to make, and was actually somewhat moving dressing up as Elders. I know a mission is something we all intend to serve and I hope our video can inspire others. All the primary kids in our ward love it.”

Barrett was also the winner of this year’s EFY International Video Contest, and screened “Mission Man” as his entry to the EFY Variety Show.

About his mission call, Barrett said, “I am absolutely elated, and cannot wait to serve the Lord and bring others unto Christ.”

One of his long-term goals is to eventually help with large-scale Church productions. “I love film-making, but I love the gospel much more, and I would love nothing more than to contribute my abilities to the Church. I will stop at nothing until I am making films and finding a way to spread truth through them. I really feel that it’s what Heavenly Father wants me to do.”

God bless you on your mission, Barrett, and in your future film making efforts!
