LDS Gospel Library App

by Larry Richman on July 1, 2011

The Church’s Gospel Library application for mobile devices has been downloaded over 800,000 times!

Recent releases of the Gospel Library application on various platforms included the following improvements:

Android: You can now download an extensive library of scriptures, conferences, magazines, and other Church publications in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and German.

iPhone and iPad: You can now sync annotations with LDS 3.0 personal study tools. More content is coming in other languages, beginning with Spanish, Portuguese, and German. There is also an expanded server capacity and increased stability.

Windows Mobile: This initial release for Windows Mobile 6.X and 7.0 devices has the full English library, basic annotation features, and audio playback of scriptures and recent general conferences.

Blackberry and Palm: No recent updates.

I hope you’re also enjoying the other apps from the Church:

  • Mormon Channel app (almost 400,00 downloads)
  • LDS Tools app (almost 250,000 downloads)
  • LDS Youth app (nearly 20,000 downloads)
  • Scripture Mastery app (over 40,000 downloads)

I’ve had the app for a couple of months now. AWESOME. Now if they could port the app which has the Ward and Stake directories to Windows Phone, that would be wonderful.

Rbc July 1, 2011 at 11:24 am

The Mormon Channel app does not update very often and the videos constantly stop. It’s kind of frustrating b/c the content is really good. My kids also really enjoy watching the videos except when they stop running.

Jim Anderson July 5, 2011 at 12:28 pm

Let Mormon Channel know of the problem, give them the phone model, make, and even carrier info, could help them figure out what it is doing and why, I’ve heard of apps having problems with specific phones, especially various Android models at times, varies from app to app what types of problems there are.

I really like the gospel tools app. My only question is how does the book of mormon stories work. I bring it up and I only see the title to each chapter. Isn’t there supposed to be more to it? If anyone can help that would be great.

Rob July 7, 2011 at 3:16 pm

Phil, you are right there is content missing in the scripture stories books. I’ll look into this. Thanks for feedback.

Max July 13, 2011 at 10:56 am

Ward and Stake directories are on the LDS Tools app.

Max July 13, 2011 at 10:57 am

When will Spanish and Portuguese become available?

Larry Richman July 15, 2011 at 8:38 am

Max, the Android version already has Spanish and Portuguese. The iPhone app is just English right now, but Spanish, Portuguese, and German are coming. When I find out the date, I’ll post it at http://ldsmediatalk.com.

I love the Gospel Library app for everything that it does in delivering free LDS material to a compact and portable device. Anyone know when the magazines will be updated? Cheers from NZ

Larry Richman August 22, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Afoa, the magazines are updated each month. You may have to click “download” or “refresh” to get them.

Afoa August 23, 2011 at 1:56 am

Thank you Larry. I’ve been using the iPhone app since February and usually I just go into Manage Library to download the most recent ensign, but Manage Library hasn’t shown the August ensign yet. How do I “refresh” to get the magazine please?

Tina September 8, 2011 at 12:51 pm

I tried to install the lds gospel library on a htc desire z, which I’ve bought in Austria (with german language pack) but the app is only in English and in the drop-down menu there is no other language available.
I use the lds gospel library on a orange san francisco mobile phone and there i’ve the drop-down menu and can choose between different languages.
Both run with android.
Any idea, how I get “german” in the drop-Down menu? thx

Asiel Brumfield September 13, 2011 at 1:39 pm

@Tina if you press the menu button then select more then press refresh content you should see the additional languages. You have to do this because of a bug we are working to fix in a release that should be available soon.

brian edwards September 26, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Asiel — that’s exactly what i needed, didn’t think the ‘refresh’ would also address the language issue. Now I’ve got Spanish as well as English. Thanks so much for posting.

Hi. I know this probably sounds like a dumb question (sometimes the simple questions are the hardest) but here it goes anyway. I would like to have Gospel Library to be able to search and study on something that I could take with me without paying the monthly fees for say an android phone or an Ipad. can anyone tell me if this is possible and how i could do it? thank you.

Jon November 29, 2012 at 9:27 pm

I am wondering when the children’s story scriptures will include the pictures. Also maps at the end of the regular scriptures.
Thanks
Jon

The sound sometimes works in the scriptures, however it turns off and now I can’t get it on again….is there something I can do to fix it, or am I missing something in settings (iPad is what I am using)

Gail July 4, 2013 at 2:41 am

Is there no audio connected to this app? If not I am heartsick, as I deleted the other version.

Larry Richman July 4, 2013 at 11:08 am

Gail,

Yes, the new app has audio. When you are reading any page, just open the right sidebar by clicking the icon in the top right that looks like a square with 1/2 shaded. That will show you the footnotes, and at the top of the sidebar, you’ll see the play button and other audio controls.

I can’t get the pictures to load on the childrens Book of Mormon. I only get blue question marks. Is that the way it’s supposed to be?

Larry Richman July 8, 2013 at 11:38 am

Nick, thanks for your feedback. I’ve reported to the Gospel Library iOS team that the Children’s Book of Mormon Stories is missing the inline images.

Stephanie Summers July 25, 2013 at 11:35 am

The pictures are still not loading on the Children’s Book of Mormon stories. (Actually none of the children’s books have pictures.)
I see that it was reported about 2 weeks so I ‘m not sure how long it takes to fix it, but just wanted to report it’s still not working.
Thanks

Larry Richman July 27, 2013 at 6:46 pm

Stephanie, I checked again with the Gospel Library team, and they tell me that it will be a long process to get all the pictures for all the items in the library. They are working on the more important items first. Book of MormonStories and the Primary Outline for Sharing Time are top priority right now.

The images to the Book of Mormon Stories should be released this weekend, but others maybe not for a long time. New Testament Stories is in progress.

Dance August 8, 2013 at 5:54 pm

Where did the Book of Mormon stories in the video section go? My kids loved those.

Larry Richman August 9, 2013 at 12:08 pm

Dance, the Book of Mormon Stories videos are there, but in the menu under Children rather than videos. In the next release, I think they will appear in both places.

Carylee September 1, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Why am I only seeing blue question mark boxes in all images of the gospel library? Maps, etc. anything that is an image? iPhone 5 btw. My husband has all of those things on his Samsung phone.

Larry Richman September 3, 2013 at 10:56 am

Carylee, Our developers are looking into it.

Denise September 12, 2013 at 9:05 pm

I love the program but none of the audio works, I wondered if there’s a setting or how can I fix it. Also confused how to download without downloading all. Is there somewhere to get more detailed directions.

Larry Richman September 13, 2013 at 3:29 pm

Denise,

I’d suggest you watch this video: http://broadcast.lds.org/ICS/techtalk/2013-09-06.html

It walks you through how to use the app, including dowloading and listening to audio.

Cinda November 2, 2013 at 10:18 am

Why do my scripture markings switch off after I’ve set them? It’s very annoying! Often a highlighted section will switch to only highlighting the first word. I use the app on my NOOK HD+. Other than that issue I love the app! I use it for teaching and personal and family gospel study. The videos, quotes, Church magazines, and resources are wonderful.

Dave Harris November 4, 2013 at 7:47 pm

Gospel Library seems to have crashed. The icon appears but has zero contents. Does that mean I’ve done something wrong? I guess I have now lost all my under linings of scriptures and conference talks.

Larry Richman November 5, 2013 at 11:47 am

Dave,

As long as you have synced your notes, they aren’t lost. See details at http://ldsmediatalk.com/2013/10/25/downloading-your-study-notebooks-on-lds-gospel-library/

You probably just need to uninstall the app and reinstall it.

Larry
