Excellent tips. However, I think they have missed a very important tip.

Avoid emails that are easy for bots to guess. For instance, johndoe@gmail.com

I highly suspect bots take first names and combine them with last names and try popular domains.
* johndoe@gmail.com
* john.doe@hotmail.com
* jdoe@yahoo.com
* johnd@live.com
etc etc etc

Years ago I did as suggested above and created multiple gmail accounts; one for personal use and another for web activity. My personal one I used a combination of first and last names, so its easy for family and friends to remember. The web activity one I created a more unguessable email, cjcweb06. Guess which one gets more spam.

My personal account received 872 since June 1st 2009. That is 800/month.

My web activity one (cjcweb06) only 600 since Apr 2007. Yes, notice the year. That is only 27/month.

And believe me I use cjcweb06 for nearly everything. I have been seriously considering changing my personal email to include numbers or something to throw off the bots.

Great tips and advice about avoiding email SPAM, which I detest. Here, all this time - I thought I was going the extra mile by following the "unsubscribe" links, as well as marking them as JUNK!
