3/4 of World’s Messages Sent by Mobile

by Larry Richman on March 31, 2009

TNS Global reports that 74% of the world’s digital messages were sent through a mobile device in January 2009, up from 59% a year ago. In emerging countries, 9 out of 10 messages are sent by a mobile device.

Although PC e-mail is still the most popular message method  in developed countries, its use is waning. Worldwide, more and more messages will be sent via mobile devices.

Wow… that is really amazing considering the number of emails I see on a daily basis. Guess I better start working on ways to leverage this in future projects…

I’d be interested to know if this is simply a message count, or measuring the amount of data in messages being sent.

My daughter sends messages like “LOL” or “Meet U L8R” and sends about a thousand of these a month. But, I’m sure the length of the content that she sends is less than about a weeks worth of e-mail that I send at work.

Her message count may be higher, but her volume is very low.

This was a count of the number of messages sent, regardless of the length of the message.

Larry: Thanks for this timely insight. It has direct bearing on our efforts in the global supply chain project.
