Remember The Hive? If I recall it was an LDS business professor at Harvard who wanted to start a LDS social networking forum. I got a job off there once. Still, I’m right on the cusp age wise–too old for facebook or myspace (I’m only 31, but if I search my high school class, I’ll only find 4 people on facebook.); but I but I can find a ton of people on LinkedIn. Where social networking becomes amazing is when you’re in places where you need it–i.e. when you’re moving outside of Utah. I’m from the Bay Area, moved to ProvOrem for the last 15 years, and now am in Arkansas. Out here there’s no saturation of LDS people, so it surprised me to what extent people came out of the woodwork to offer me jobs, etc. Anyway, I think 1) networking is life and death important outside Utah, and 2) LinkedIn is a good site.

which is basically social networking based on what you read. I recently added a “Mormon” reading group, and am interested in who signs up. This could be a wonderful opportunity for us to all get together and find which are the “best books” for us to be seeking wisdom from.

I was going to say almost exactly what Jeff said. I think there is more benefit in having Latter-Day Saints participating in existing social networks like Facebook, and they are. There are general LDS groups, wards, missions, and missionary focused groups.

… oh and you are right there is an enterprising young adults (if I can call myself that) working on an LDS focused application to share your favorite verse on your profile

Sounds like an interesting idea. Well, the value of social networking to LDS singles is obvious, of course. So, I would try to think out of the box a little. I think we could make a social networking site uniquely LDS by making it family-centric, not individual-centric. (I don't know how that would work out in practical terms, but it sounds cool.) I personally feel that blogs and other social networking tools are a great way for families to keep in touch and stay close, as I mentioned in one of my blog entries. That's very much in line with the church's mission.

In a very real way many LDS people already have a social network… it’s called Facebook. Facebook’s group function has long been used for Mormon groups of all kinds. I am personally not anything near a single adult, but I have several friends in the single adult wards and they use facebook a ton to correlate activities and … well, socialize.

With Facebook’s new F8 platform I imagine it won’t be long before some enterprising young adult starts writing some sort of LDS focused applications. Maybe report your Home teaching on facebook. Share your favorite scriptures. What are you currently reading in the scriptures. The possibilities are endless.

Just a couple thoughts off the top of my head…
