Podcast Links on LDS.org

by Larry Richman on December 22, 2006

We have placed three podcast links on two pages of LDS.org for testing and evaluation purposes as we simultaneously develop a strategy and approach for podcasting.

Two of the podcasts are audio files and one is PDF. We invite you to subscribe to these podcasts and share with us your perspectives and thoughts. They will only be available for a limited time.

The 2 sites are:

This is terrific, it even has album art.

I have a few suggestions for the general conference feed: first, remove “All Sessions Podcast” from the Album tag, second, add “October 2006″ to the Album tag, third, consider turning “Compilation” on (this is debatable). I like how the talks are numbered in “Name”.

The “Teachings” PDFs are missing copyright notice in the comments. I don’t think “PDF Podcast” is needed. Track numbers would be helpful.

I hope these become a long-term service.

This is great. I think it would be better if the Teachings podcast(s) were to have the lesson for the current week each week.

“Teaching” PDF’s or Podcast (audio) are both great ideas. Some prefer to listen (podcast), others prefer to read (PDF).
What they both have in common is that they are controlled by RSS and so PDF and Podcast are both the end product of the RSS file and therefore they are both relevant to various people. Continue providing RSS files for both outputs.
Like David said I too think that the Teaching RSS file should contain the next lesson due rather than all of them as RSS is mostly used for things that are constantly changing rather than static information.
I use many RSS links to download the latest mp3, pdf, html page etc of news articles, radio programs, TV programs, business reports etc and it is all based on information that is current at that stage.
Similar implementations can be achieved with the magazines where you provide an RSS file of the latest Ensign, New Era and Friend magazines in PDF format.

Wow! I’m impressed! I’ve been sending feedback messages for sometime now, suggesting the use of RSS and podcasting. I’ve been listening to podcasts regularly since Dec ‘04. I’m glad to see the Church is moving forward. I had subscribed to the KSL Feed of General Conference, but I didn’t like it, because it had the entire session on one file. I really like the way it’s broken up by individule talks, the album artwork is cool, and the audio and .pdfs work well with iTunes.

I’m going to listen to the Kimball Book on my Commute with my iPod. I’ll let you know how it goes! Keep this up. I like the idea of the pdf feeds, especially for the magazines.

I also think RSS and podcasts are a great way to deliver this content and hope they become long term. Regarding Teachings podcasts for each week, I don’t have a problem with them all coming at once. It’s only around 30 and you are then less restricted in easily accessing forthcoming lessons, even a few weeks ahead (useful if you are preparing the lesson).

I have noticed some slight formatting problems with the accompanying text to the Teachings RSS feeds. Hyperlinks seem to be set in a significantly larger font size. (Using Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 under OS X 10.3.9)

Great content; however, 1-10 of the General Conference podcast is not available for download–will it be made available at some point?

Tom Johnson January 3, 2007 at 4:43 pm

I think that 1-10 are the Relief Society Genral Meeting Files!

The numbers are tracks numbers, but also have some logic to them. The first number (the 10s) refers to the session, and the second number (the 1s) refers to the speaker.

Track number 11 is the first speaker in the first session. Track 53 is the third speaker in the Sunday afternoon session.

The group of tracks in the 30 range are held aside for the Priesthood session, and will be used for that content someday.

A track number 10 would be a full session first session of conference file with all the speaker. We do not have any tracks starting with 0 (like 01).

Using this track numbering provides some intelligence for us to manage the content and we hope provides value to the end user.

When will the podcasts for the April 2007 Conference be available?

Lars Rasmussen August 7, 2007 at 7:30 pm

I am still unable to find a separate April 2007 podcast broken down by talk. KSL does provide October 2006 Conference & April 2007 Conference (in one-hour chunks only) podcasts.
