Online Video becomes HOTTER as Broadband Grows

by Larry Richman on August 11, 2006

13 million households viewed online content in 2005. The technology research firm In-Stat believes that will grow to 131 million households by the year 2010.

One of the drivers behind this growth is the widespread adoption of broadband. In-stat predicts broadband will grow from 13 million households in 2005 to 413 million by 2010.

Many players are competing for this huge market. In addition to the massive YouTube, MySpace, and other social networks, aggregators such a Google, Yahoo!, AOL and Apple have all thrown their hats into the ring.

The interesting things is that the largest number of online video viewers are over 35 years old!

Note: YouTube has surpassed MySpace in the share of global internet visits a day (3.9% and 3.35%, respectively), according to Alexa. This is a sample that some say is representative of the broader online population. Others disagree. BusinessWeek has some additional stats. People watch 100 million videos daily on YouTube, which accounts for 60% of all videos watched online. 65,000 new videos are uploaded to YouTube daily.

I don’t think a day goes by that someone sends me a link to a Youtube link either through email or a site I visit.
